Aegyo

Aegyo refers to a cute, endearing display of affection expressed through voice, facial expressions, gestures, and behavior, often intended to charm others or appear adorable. It can include speaking in a sweet or babyish tone, exaggerated cute poses, playful pouting, or affectionate phrases, and it is used among friends, couples, and family, as well as in entertainment. While cuteness exists in every culture, aegyo is notable for being a recognized, almost performative social behavior in Korea, sometimes even requested on the spot ("do some aegyo!"). It can be used sincerely to show affection, playfully to lighten a mood, or strategically to soften a request, though when overdone it may also be teased as excessive. Aegyo is especially prominent in K-pop and Korean variety shows, where idols are frequently asked to perform it, making it one of the most visible elements of Korean pop culture to international fans. Because it overlaps heavily with idol culture, aegyo can fit under both general Korean culture and K-pop.

애교는 목소리, 표정, 몸짓, 행동을 통해 드러내는 귀엽고 사랑스러운 애정 표현으로, 상대의 마음을 사거나 사랑스럽게 보이려는 의도가 담기는 경우가 많다. 달콤하거나 어리광 섞인 말투, 과장된 귀여운 포즈, 장난스러운 삐짐, 애정 어린 표현 등이 포함되며 친구, 연인, 가족 사이는 물론 예능에서도 쓰인다. 귀여움은 어느 문화에나 있지만, 애교는 한국에서 하나의 인정된, 거의 '수행'에 가까운 사회적 행동이라는 점이 특징이다. 심지어 즉석에서 "애교 좀 해봐!"라고 요청받기도 한다. 애정을 진심으로 드러낼 때, 분위기를 가볍게 풀 때, 혹은 부탁을 부드럽게 만들 때 전략적으로 쓰이기도 하는데, 지나치면 과하다고 놀림받기도 한다. 애교는 특히 K-pop과 한국 예능에서 두드러진다. 아이돌들이 자주 애교를 요청받기 때문에, 해외 팬들에게는 한국 대중문화에서 가장 눈에 띄는 요소 중 하나가 되었다. 아이돌 문화와 크게 겹치기 때문에, 애교는 넓은 의미의 한국 문화와 K-pop 어느 쪽으로도 분류될 수 있다.
