Jeong (Korean Affection)

Jeong is a deep, hard-to-translate Korean concept describing the emotional bond, attachment, and sense of connection that builds up between people over time. It is warmer and more enduring than simple affection, encompassing loyalty, sympathy, and a feeling of shared closeness that can extend to family, friends, neighbors, and even places or long-familiar things. Unlike a feeling that appears suddenly, jeong is understood to accumulate slowly through shared experiences, small acts of care, and time spent together. This is why Koreans might feel jeong even toward someone they argue with often, the history and closeness create a bond that is difficult to break. Expressions like "there's jeong between us" capture relationships that go beyond logic or convenience. Because there is no single English word that fully captures it, jeong is frequently introduced as one of the essential keys to understanding Korean relationships and emotional life. It helps explain cultural habits such as generously sharing food, looking after others without being asked, and maintaining long-term ties even when they are not strictly practical.
