"Korean age" refers to a traditional way of counting age in Korea in which a person is considered one year old at birth, and everyone gains a year on January 1st rather than on their individual birthday. This means a baby born in late December could be counted as two years old just days later, once the new year arrives, even though only a short time has passed. For much of Korean history, this system coexisted with the international "full age" system used for legal and official purposes, which often left people juggling two or even three different ages depending on context. This frequently confused foreigners and led to the common question of why a Korean person seems to have more than one age. In June 2023, South Korea officially standardized the use of international age for legal and administrative matters, meaning most official documents now follow the same system as the rest of the world. Still, the traditional counting method remains culturally familiar in casual conversation, so understanding "Korean age" is helpful for anyone engaging with Korean media or society.
