Nunchi

Nunchi is the Korean art of quickly reading a room, sensing what other people are thinking or feeling, and adjusting your words and behavior accordingly. Literally translating to something like "eye-measure," it describes a kind of social intuition: noticing the mood, picking up on unspoken cues, and knowing when to speak, stay quiet, or offer help. In Korean society, having "good nunchi" is considered a valuable skill, while someone who lacks it, who misreads situations or is oblivious to the atmosphere, is said to have "no nunchi." It shapes everyday interactions, from workplaces and family gatherings to friendships, where harmony and consideration for the group are highly valued. Nunchi has drawn international attention in recent years, sometimes described in foreign media as a kind of "superpower" for building relationships and navigating social life.
