Suneung (Korean college entrance exam)

수능

Suneung (officially the CSAT) is South Korea's national college entrance exam, a single high-stakes test that largely determines which university a student can enter. Held once a year, it's taken by hundreds of thousands of students and is treated as one of the most important days in a young person's life. The whole country adjusts around it: businesses and the stock market often open late so roads are clear, police escort late students to test sites, and during the English listening section, airplane takeoffs and landings are held to avoid noise. Younger students cheer on test-takers, and parents pray at temples and churches. It vividly reflects the intense role of education in Korean society.
("The suneung is tomorrow, so the whole family is on edge.") ("They say even planes don't take off during the suneung.")
