In its early use, it carried a positive, aspirational tone. More recently, however, the term has taken on a critical or mocking nuance online. It is often used for middle-aged people, frequently men, who try too hard to act young, cling to outdated ideas of "coolness," or behave in ways that younger people find awkward or lacking in self-awareness. The shift shows how a once-flattering label can flip into something used to poke fun.
